Bundle discounts: calculating their effect on supplier selection

A bundle discount applies to a defined set of items or quantities. Its value depends on what must be purchased to qualify: comparing each line separately can miss the benefit.

Compare a discount only after checking its eligible base, conditions and the fees of the complete plan.

What the discount actually covers

Identify eligible items, required quantity or amount, time period, supplier and stacking rules. A 20% discount on a complete bundle is not a 20% reduction on any individual line. A per-order threshold may not carry over across separate deliveries.

Also check whether the threshold is measured before or after discount and whether transport, taxes or excluded items count toward it. If the quote does not specify this, request clarification rather than choosing the most favorable interpretation.

Example: two lines, one combined decision

Fictional example before tax, with no delivery fees and technically equivalent offers. You need 1,000 boxes and 1,000 inserts. A quotes USD 12,000 and USD 8,000 respectively and offers 20% off both lines only when bought together. B quotes USD 10,000 and USD 8,500, with no discount.

Three plans for the same fictional requirement
PlanCalculationTotal cost
Lowest price per lineB: boxes + A: inserts, no discountUSD 18,000
All from B10,000 + 8,500USD 18,500
Complete bundle from A(12,000 + 8,000) × 0.80USD 16,000

The A bundle costs USD 2,000 less than selecting by line in this example. This compares three fictional plans; it is neither achieved customer savings nor evidence for a different case.

When a discount is not worthwhile

Buying extra only to reach a threshold can increase spending, inventory and obsolescence risk. Compare the actual requirement with mandatory quantities, extra fees and storage constraints. Non-stackable discounts must never be added together without explicit evidence.

From quote to a checkable plan

BidResolve lets you review extracted terms, their source and scope before accepting a model. Calculation combines represented discounts and constraints; a separate check verifies the resulting plan’s cost and feasibility. A missing or unrepresentable term requires clarification, not an assumption.
